Senior Linux Engineer
Job description
We're looking for a seasoned Senior Linux Web Administrator or OSS Engineer with demonstrable knowledge of Linux systems, web server administration and proxy technologies. Suitable candidate will have significant experience in setting up and managing Squid and Nginx proxies, along with comprehensive expertise in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). You will be overseeing essential infrastructure components, optimizing traffic flow, and ensuring the performance and security of web applications in an open-source setup.
Responsibilities
Linux Administration: Manage, configure and optimise Linux-based systems, with a focus on RHEL environments.
Squid Proxy Management: Configure and maintain Squid proxy servers for caching, access control and load balancing.
Nginx Configuration: Deploy and optimise Nginx as a reverse proxy, load balancer and web server in high-traffic environments.
Web Traffic Optimisation: Implement and fine-tune proxy solutions to ensure high performance and security, leveraging Squid and Nginx in tandem.
System Security: Apply best practices for securing proxy servers, Linux systems and web services, including setting up firewalls, SSL/TLS configurations and access controls.
Troubleshooting & Performance Tuning: Identify and resolve server and proxy-related performance issues and ensure systems are highly available and resilient.
Open Source Tools: Utilise various open-source software tools for monitoring, managing and improving system performance.
Documentation: Document system configurations, processes and troubleshooting steps to ensure smooth operations and knowledge sharing within the team.
Requirements
Hands-on experience Linux (RHEL preferred) system administration, including installation, configuration and maintenance.
Demonstrable hands-on experience with Squid for caching and proxy configuration in a production environment.
Proficient with Nginx for reverse proxy, load balancing, and web server management.
Experience in managing web traffic and proxy servers to optimise performance, security and scalability.
Understanding open-source software solutions and integration in enterprise environments.
Experience with network protocols, TCP/IP, DNS and HTTP/S.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex systems.
Familiarity with automation tools like Ansible, Puppet, or Chef is a plus
Qualifications
Certifications such as Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) or Linux Foundation Certified Engineer.
Experience with containerisation technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) and orchestration frameworks.
Familiarity with monitoring tools (e.g., Nagios, Prometheus) to track system and proxy performance.
